Team wellbeing and relational health

Healthy teams work well not because people are perfect, but because relationships feel safe, respectful, and supportive. Small everyday habits make the biggest difference.

1. Create a Safe Atmosphere

People think more clearly and collaborate better when they feel safe.

Try:

  • Welcoming questions and different viewpoints

  • Being open about uncertainty

  • Responding with curiosity rather than judgement

2. Communicate Clearly and Kindly

How we speak to each other shapes the whole team.

Try:

  • Using clear, calm language

  • Checking you’ve understood before reacting

  • Naming concerns early, before they grow

3. Notice Team Patterns

Teams fall into repeated cycles — some helpful, some draining.

Try:

  • Naming when the team feels stuck

  • Exploring how each person is seeing the situation

  • Noticing what helps conversations move forward

4. Support Emotional Wellbeing

Everyone has days when stress or pressure shows up.

Try:

  • Brief check-ins at the start of meetings

  • Normalising conversations about workload and stress

  • Encouraging realistic boundaries

5. Handle Tension with Respect

Conflict is normal — how you approach it matters.

Try:

  • Slowing down when emotions rise

  • Speaking from your own experience (“I feel…”)

  • Listening to understand, not to win

6. Build Small Moments of Connection

Connection grows through tiny, consistent actions.

Try:

  • Appreciations at the end of meetings

  • Celebrating small wins

  • Checking in with colleagues after difficult days
